Real thermal comfort
Warmer in winter, cooler in summer. The brick becomes part of the insulation system rather than a heat leak.
Most of Bristol’s older terraces (Victorian and Edwardian stock across St George, Easton, Bedminster, Bishopston, Redland, Clifton and beyond) have solid brick walls with no cavity to fill. That leaves internal insulation, which eats floor space, or external wall insulation, which wraps the outside of the house in a thick insulated render.
External wall insulation is the more effective choice for most people. It puts the insulation outside the brick, which means the brick itself starts working for you. Solid masonry has real thermal mass. Insulated on the outside, that mass helps stabilise the temperature inside your home rather than radiating heat out through the walls. On top of that, EWI leaves your internal floor space untouched.

Adding EWI thickens your walls by around 100 to 150 millimetres. The problem is that the roof was built for the original wall thickness. The eaves overhang no longer covers the new wall face. Rainwater runs straight down the wall, or worse, tracks in behind the new insulation and gets trapped between the EWI board and the brick underneath.
Trapped moisture between insulation and masonry is the failure mode that ruins EWI jobs. Once it starts, it’s slow, expensive to fix, and often invisible from the outside until damage is done. Our roofing background means we handle the eaves extension as part of the EWI job: new fascia and soffit lines, guttering repositioned, verge and ridge details reworked so water sheds off the new wall thickness. Done properly, it’s the difference between EWI that lasts and EWI that fails.

Especially the older solid-wall stock the city is full of.

Solid-wall Bristol homes are among the leakiest in the UK. EWI can dramatically cut heating demand.
Internal insulation eats floor area room by room. EWI adds thickness to the outside instead.
It's not just insulation. It's a whole system that has to be right at every layer.
Most EWI jobs that fail early do so for the same handful of reasons.
